Vol. 1 Fables opens with an extensive biographical introduction based on original research. A short linguistic supplement appended to vol. 2 Tales contains Ramsay's observations on English and Scots (1721), his Scots-English glossary (1729), and an exhaustive rhyme list compiled from the text of the present edition that may serve as a guide to his pronunciation.
